Be still my brain

I am being out-posted by the comments. Oops. But that reminds me; I know some of you are reading and not commenting. Comment!

What has been going on?

I've been trapped in the hysteria that is the end of the semester. One of my papers is pretty much done after much pain. It's not due for a few days, so I think I'm going to leave it alone for a few days and move on to the next one. I think this is the first time in graduate school that I've worked on a paper early. I catch on eventually...just give it two years.

To let you in on how big of a dork I am, I've been thinking about this post title for a while. It's a take off of the song by the Postal Service, "Be Still My Heart." My brain is tired, and I wish I could just give it a break. Maybe then I could start watching the 30+ hrs of Ellen that I have stored on my Tivo.

I can't lie though; I'm actually watching one of those episodes right now. Funnily enough, the show just reminded me of my inadequacies as a teacher. Right now my students are in the midst of writing satires and cultural critiques. One of my students wrote a satire about three absurd laws in the state of MA. At first, I couldn't tell if they were real laws or not so I didn't know how to critique the essay. Then I tried looking them up on the MA gov. site. I couldn't find them, so I chided the student for it. I then looked like a jacka** when he told me that they were in fact real laws. About 2 minutes ago, I watched a segment from an episode of Ellen where she played a game with James Spader. She quizzed him on whether or not laws from MA were real or not (since he's from here and is on Boston Legal). She read two of the laws my student had used in his paper: "When attending a wake in the state of MA, it is illegal to eat more than 3 sandwiches," and "One must have a full bath before going to bed." I can't imagine that my student came up with this idea on his own after watching this, but maybe I would have been more familiar with them if I had watched the episode from 3/6 before now...haha.

I have a few random updates on the mens in my life...but it doesn't add up to too much, so don't get too excited. It's a good thing I haven't turned this blog into a dating blog like the other great blogs I read (go to the links!) because I would be posting even less. Anyhoo, the updates.

* I spoke to social anxiety boy (check the archives) for the first time in person last week. It was the third time I had seen him at FP but the first time we spoke. It only took 7 months. My lord. But that's not going anywhere. He still has issues.

* I flirted with a waiter at Harry's on Thursday when I met CK there after my MIT class. She even tried to push things along and left me there before I was done with my beer. He told me to come back after I take my comprehensive exam to tell him how it goes, so that was nice.

* I continue to ogle coffee guy. He hasn't mentioned his gf in weeks, so I don't know what's going on there. But I might make him go out for a drink with me on Tuesday b/c it's my birthday. Speaking of which, something strange happened today when I went into FP a little while ago. One of the other guys was working and I happened to mention that my birthday was coming up. I said that a few of us might go out to dinner. He said, "Oh yeah? You and coffee guy?" Huh? What? Why would he think he was going with us? He even made the little fist movement that usually means "getting it on." Huh? Surprised, I said: "Umm, he has a gf." To which he responded, "He does? I didn't know that." Interesting. Very interesting. I am not sure why he would connect the two of us. He doesn't work all that often and hasn't seen how much I talk to coffee guy. I am intrigued.

* In about a month I am moving to NC for my summer job (and maybe longer). I was delighted to hear that a few of the men I had my eye on last summer are returning. Watch out ;-)

In the same way that Eddie Izzard says that he likes to end his stand-up routines with a bit of an "eh" feeling, I like to end my blog posts like that.

The end.
