"Reality" star enters my reality
This past weekend I was at a party that my friend Emo was throwing. I ran into a colleague of mine, and we started talking about television for some reason. I let my dirty little secret slip: that being, that I'm a TV junkie...and I love love LOVE reality TV. In typical English major fashion, he scoffed at me and started arguing the dangers of television, particularly reality TV. His argument wasn't very sound however, and his main criticism was that reality TV isn't really "real" and that it's to blame for most of the ills found in contemporary society. Whatever. I could argue this right now if I were so inclined, but I'm not in the mood. My main rebuttal is that I can (surprise surprise) be intellectual AND watch reality TV. I can even chew gum and walk at the same time. Wow, look at me!
Anyhoo. This evening I ventured to the North End for a wine tasting with my fabulous friend CK. It was at Nebo, and featured 18 wines. I'm not sure how many we sampled. The lines were crazy, and there was only one pourer per table. Although one was deliciously cute, and if they had been pouring more than a sip full of wine into the glasses I would have requested that I get to sample him next!
Enter, reality "star". A guy walked in, and CK and I immediately felt like he was someone we had seen before. Being the reality show whore that I am, I placed him within a few seconds. He was on the Apprentice. His name was not so memorable, and I did not know it until I looked it up just now: Michael. CK and I have decided that all men named John or Mike are BAD news. I didn't speak with this gentleman, but I believe that he would not prove our theory false. He caught my eye a few times, and I ended up rubbing elbows with him (literally) as I ate my yummy Margherita pizza at the bar.
If tonight taught me anything, it taught me that the people on reality tv shows are real people, but it's the shows that make them seem more interesting than they actually are. Haha. We overheard him whine about the "paparazzi" (oh please, like 5 people took pictures of him...mainly the restaurant employees) and he was talking about his plans to open a take-out burger restaurant. You heard it here first!
Aside: I probably gave more attention to this encounter than it deserves, but hey...it was my first time seeing a reality star in person!
In other news, I messaged film guy when I got home. We've been corresponding through AIM since our coffee date, and I figured it's time we move it off the Internet again. I asked him if he'd like to do something, so we planned a movie date for tomorrow night. After tomorrow I should be able to tell whether or not I'd like to see him again, or cut the cord.
Parting thoughts: I taught the first day of my new class today. I had planned a stellar opening with a few quotes from the old show My So-Called Life. None of them knew what the hell I was talking about; it made me feel old.
