If you haven't read the post, It's all funny, you should probably start there.
You may have thought that the phone call debacle was over...
You should know better!
About 20 minutes ago my phone started ringing. When I checked the caller ID I was horrified to see that it was the sweet old professor.
My heart started pounding.
She wouldn't have just called me out of the blue. She must have connected my number to the alarming phone call she got last night.
I panicked, again.
I answered, didn't say anything, and hung up.
My heart started pounding faster.
I ran to the living room, which is the only place I get reception and tried to change my message greeting from my personal recorded one to the machine voice. I didn't want her to know who had called her, but I knew that she would probably call right back.
It was a race against time. Could I change it before she called?
Of course not. Everyone knows that there are an assload of message menus to get through. Press 2. Now press 3. Now press 5. Just give me the right damn option, woman!
She beeped in. She left a message.
"B, this is Linda. Call me at ***-***-****"
Busted.
She had my name. She's a sneaky old woman. How did she get my number?
I was trapped. I had to call her back and claim my shame.
What a dear woman. She was so relieved to hear that I was okay. Last night when I called, she just thought that it was a wrong number. But this morning she called the phone company to get the number (tricky, very tricky) and when she called and heard my voice and name she got really worried.
Being the diplomat that she is, she gracefully accepted my story and laughed. She even managed to propel the conversation along to ask how my teaching is going and to tell me about a new class she is teaching. She thought the circumstances were bizarre, but she was glad that I had accidentally called her.
The story ends well, but I am still mortified. She probably thought to herself as she hung up, "What a strange girl..."
